It can be hard to motivate yourself to keep fit during the long, cold winters, but if you’re a skier you have extra incentive. Going from zero to ski slope is a sure way to get injuries and detract from the enjoyment of your expensive ski holiday. Visiting Protom Fitness at our gyms in Warmley or Westbury on Trym is a great way to train hard, ski easy!
Why Ski Fitness Matters
Skiing is a full-body workout that combines strength, endurance, balance, and flexibility. The sport challenges your legs to power through turns, your core stability and your cardiovascular system. Without proper preparation, you may find yourself struggling with fatigue or, worse, sidelined by injury. A dedicated ski fitness program helps you build the stamina, strength, and coordination needed to maximize your time on the slopes (and deal with the increased pressures of exercising at altitude).
The Key Components of Ski Fitness
Leg Strength Strong legs are the foundation of skiing. Exercises like squats, lunges, and step-ups build the quadriceps, hamstrings, and glutes, which are essential for controlling your movements and absorbing shocks on uneven terrain. Adding plyometric exercises like jump squats or box jumps can also improve your explosive power for quick turns.
Core Stability – Your core is your body’s anchor when skiing. A strong core enhances balance, posture, and control during dynamic movements. We incorporate planks, Russian twists and kettlebell routines into your plan to strengthen your core muscles.
Cardiovascular Endurance – Skiing at high altitudes can be physically taxing, so building your cardiovascular endurance is crucial. Our kickboxing and boxercise combinations are perfect for this!
Balance and Coordination – Good balance and coordination help you navigate tricky slopes and react quickly to changes in terrain. We have a great range of balance equipment including the free form board and balance ball which are ideal for improving your balance.
Flexibility and Mobility – Flexibility is often overlooked but vital for skiing. Stretching regularly helps maintain a full range of motion, reducing the risk of strains and improving overall performance. Focus on dynamic stretches for your legs, hips, and back before workouts and static stretches after. We can also employ the mobility stick here for a really rewarding workout.
Your Home Exercise Plan
Your home workout plan would be tailored to you personally but here’s an example of what that might look like. You can do 3-4 times a week to get ski-ready:
- Warm-Up (5-10 minutes):
- Dynamic stretches: leg swings, arm circles, hip openers
- Light cardio: jogging or jumping jacks
- Strength Training (30 minutes):
- Squats: 3 sets of 12-15 reps
- Lunges: 3 sets of 10 reps per leg
- Deadlifts: 3 sets of 12 reps
- Plank with shoulder taps: 3 sets of 30 seconds
- Cardio (15 minutes):
- HIIT: 1 minute sprint, 1 minute walk (repeat 6 times)
- Balance Training (10 minutes):
- Single-leg balance with eyes closed: 3 sets of 30 seconds per leg
- Stability ball rollouts: 3 sets of 10
- Cool-Down (5-10 minutes):
