Bristol is now a world class surf destination! A decade ago no one would have expected to hear those words. But The Wave in Easter Compton is a truly transcendental experience. Developed on farmland near Avonmouth, this is one of only 19 artificial wave pools in the world.
What makes The Wave special?
The attention to detail at The Wave is just stunning. The architects and designers who worked on the project thought of everything. For instance, cobalt blue paint on the brickwork that makes up the ‘ocean’ floor means that the water looks as crystal clear as it is in the Caribbean. Hundreds of panels with different contouring were created to effect the necessary shelving to create waves.
There’s a play area for children, a great cafe and a shop with all the coolest surfer clothing. Saunas can warm you up when you exit the wavepool on cold days and there are luxurious cabins for overnight stays. Everything is created with maximum sustainability in mind.

How fit do you need to be?
As well as all the exercise you get on a one hour surf session (wave pools are super tiring as there’s not much break in between the waves and you have to be very competent at paddling) you can warm up and down on the way to and from the Wave. There’s a lovely walk of about 1 kilometre from the carpark which many people choose to cycle or longboard.
Personal Training Exercises to Improve Surfing Performance
Surfing requires a combination of strength, balance, endurance, and flexibility. To enhance your performance in the water, a well-rounded personal training routine should target key muscle groups, improve cardiovascular fitness, and develop balance. Below are some essential exercises to help you become a stronger and more efficient surfer.
ProTom Fitness offers great core exercises for you (though we don’t offer swimming training).
1. Core Strength Exercises
A strong core is crucial for stability and control while paddling and riding waves. These exercises will help build a solid core foundation:
- Plank Variations: Standard, side planks, and plank rotations engage the entire core, improving endurance and stability.
- Russian Twists: Strengthens oblique muscles, aiding in balance and quick turns on the board.
- Leg Raises: Enhances lower core strength, which is essential for powerful pop-ups.
2. Upper Body and Paddling Strength
Paddling requires strong shoulders, back, and arms. These exercises will improve endurance and efficiency:
- Pull-Ups: Develop back and arm strength, mimicking the paddling motion.
- Push-Ups: Strengthen the chest, shoulders, and triceps, improving pop-up power.
- Lat Pulldowns: Target the latissimus dorsi muscles, which play a key role in paddling.
- Dumbbell Shoulder Press: Enhances shoulder strength, reducing fatigue while paddling.
3. Lower Body and Leg Power
Strong legs are essential for stability and maneuverability while riding waves. Focus on these exercises:
- Squats (Bodyweight or Weighted): Improve leg strength and explosive power for better wave control and smooth pop ups.
- Lunges: Enhance balance and strengthen the quadriceps, hamstrings and glutes.
- Calf Raises: Improve ankle strength and flexibility, aiding in board control.
4. Balance and Coordination Drills
Balance is one of the most critical aspects of surfing. Incorporate these exercises to improve stability:
- Bosu Ball Squats: Mimic the instability of a surfboard, improving balance.
- Single-Leg Deadlifts: Strengthen stabilising muscles and improve coordination.
- Balance Board Training: Simulates surfing movements, enhancing reflexes and foot positioning.
5. Cardiovascular Endurance Training
Surfing requires sustained effort, making endurance training essential. While we can’t help with these – we can give you a personal training plan which will:
- Swimming: Directly improves paddling endurance.
- Rowing Machine: Engages the upper body and core while improving cardiovascular fitness.
- Jump Rope: Builds stamina and improves foot speed for quick pop-ups.
By incorporating these exercises into your training routine, you’ll develop the strength, balance, and endurance needed to perform at your best in the surf.
