Father and Son: A Legacy in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Rugby

On October 19, 2024, at the prestigious BJJ Junior European Gi & No Gi Championships, 14-year-old István András Varga made a powerful statement by earning 2nd place in the Junior European Championship. Standing proudly on the podium, he marked himself as one of Europe’s most promising young talents in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ).

But this achievement is no accident—it’s the product of raw talent, discipline, and relentless training, deeply rooted in a family legacy of athletic excellence.

A Sporting Heritage

István András follows in the footsteps of his father, Dr. István Károly Varga, a lifelong athlete and European Champion himself. In 2024, Dr. Varga earned the title of European Champion at CompNet London in the Master 4 Blue Belt (94.3 kg) category and placed 2nd in the Master Absolute division at the same event.

A Story of Dedication and Determination

In both life and sport, the Varga family believes success is earned—not given. Their philosophy revolves around daily discipline, structured training, and an unwavering mindset. They understand that general fitness alone won’t cut it in elite sport. That’s why their training goes beyond the basics, focusing on sport-specific preparation for both BJJ and rugby.

Together, they have created a refined, targeted training program designed to develop not just physical strength, but also mental toughness and tactical sharpness.

Functional and Competition-Specific Training

The Varga training method blends old-school grit with modern performance science, using bodyweight and functional exercises that are ideal for grappling and high-impact sports like rugby:

  • Advanced push-up variations (including one-arm push-ups)
  • Pull-ups and rope climbs (no leg hooks for grip and core strength)
  • Planks, dips, and deep squats to build core and leg power
  • Agility drills and explosive movements tailored to BJJ and rugby transitions
  • Breathwork and mental endurance exercises for better focus under pressure

This minimalist, intelligent approach emphasises control, body awareness and injury prevention—crucial elements for long-term success in high-contact sports.

Shared Successes and a Growing Legacy

Their dedication has translated into consistent success across multiple international platforms, including:

  • CompNet UK National Championships (2022 & 2023) – dominating performances
  • Medals at ADCC Hungary, part of one of the world’s toughest No-Gi circuits
  • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Hungarian Open – victories in both Gi and No-Gi divisions
  • European podiums and titles in 2024 and 2025

At the Bristol Open 2025 on March 16, both father and son stood tall once again:

  • András won gold in the Boys Gi / Green / Teen III / Above 73.0 kg category, representing Roger Gracie Academy West Bristol Club
  • Dr. Varga earned bronze in the Male Gi / Blue / Master 4 & 5 -46+- / -100.5 kg Super Heavy category

András also shines in rugby as an Outside Centre (#13) for St. Mary’s OB R.F.C., where his conditioning and mental toughness from BJJ provide a unique edge on the field.

Looking Ahead – Seeking Support

As their journey continues, the Varga family is actively looking for sponsors and supporters to help them reach even greater heights. Their vision is not only to compete at the top levels, but also to inspire future athletes and eventually become trainers and mentors.

András, already a 9-time BJJ gold medallist, is committed to learning, improving, and evolving. With aspirations to become a personal trainer, he embodies the belief that true coaching is about more than physical ability—it’s about empathy, adaptation, and individualised support.

The Varga family is a powerful example of what happens when discipline, strategy, and passion come together. Whether on the tatami or the rugby field, their message is clear:

“Success is not a gift—it is earned daily, through sweat, willpower, and an unbreakable commitment to growth.“
