Weight Loss Jabs – Are They Worth It?

Pick your poison— weight loss jabs are everywhere right now. We all know someone whose clothes are suddenly hanging off them. The dramatic weight loss is hard to ignore. And let’s be honest, we know they haven’t done it through hours in the gym.

Wegovy. Mounjaro. Ozempic – What’s really going on with these injections—and are they worth it?

A Shortcut or a Strategy?

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Weight loss injections can offer legitimate health benefits for people with obesity or diabetes, but they’re not a magic solution for someone simply chasing a slimmer look for their next holiday.

The biggest concern? Muscle loss.
Fat can be burned away, but muscle must be built—and that only comes from resistance training and movement.

Ozempic: What You Need to Know

Ozempic (semaglutide) is a prescription medication primarily used for treating type 2 diabetes, but it’s also been increasingly prescribed for weight management. It’s part of a class of drugs called GLP-1 receptor agonists, and like any medication, it comes with pros and cons.

✅ Pros of Ozempic

  • Effective blood sugar control
Helps regulate insulin and glucagon; lowers HbA1c levels.
  • Weight loss
Proven to reduce weight even in non-diabetics.
  • Cardiovascular benefits
Lowers the risk of heart attack and stroke in people with type 2 diabetes.
  • Convenient dosing
    Once-weekly injection.
  • Low risk of hypoglycemia (when not taken with insulin).

❌ Cons of Ozempic

  • Digestive side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation—especially at the start.
  • Cost
Starts at around £129/month in the UK.
  • Requires injections
Not everyone is comfortable with self-injecting.
  • Potential serious side effects
Pancreatitis (rare); potential link to thyroid tumours (in animals only).
  • Not suitable for type 1 diabetes
Or for those with diabetic ketoacidosis.
  • Slow titration
The dosage must be increased gradually, delaying full effect.
  • Rebound weight gain
Once you stop, weight often returns unless lifestyle changes are in place.

A Trainer’s Perspective: What Matters Most

From a personal trainer’s point of view, weight loss drugs can be a useful kickstart—especially for those who are struggling to get started due to age, metabolism, or a history of yo-yo dieting.

But here’s the truth:
➡️ Training without fuel is hard.
One of our clients recently said, “The food noise is gone,” while on a weight loss jab. That’s powerful—but it also means you’re less likely to eat what your body needs to support exercise, muscle recovery and energy.

If you’re not feeding your body properly, you’re not just losing fat—you’re losing muscle, which slows metabolism even further and makes long-term weight management harder.

Training While Using Weight Loss Jabs

If you’re on a jab and want to keep training, here’s how to support your body:

  • Eat something light before training, even if you’re not hungry
(Think: a little protein and fat first, then carbs 30 mins later)
  • Choose steady-state cardio or light weights if you’re low on energy
  • On rest days, still eat small, nutritious meals—your body needs recovery fuel
  • Focus on protein, healthy fats, and minerals, especially on training days

Using weight loss jabs is a bit like fasting without the hunger, but you still need to fuel your body smartly—especially when you’re active.

What Do I Recommend?

It’s simple:

  1. Start with the jab if you need it—especially if it helps break the cycle.
  2. Don’t stay on it forever. Use it in intervals if needed, but have a long-term plan.
  3. Eat well, even when you’re not hungry. Junk food + jabs = bad combo.
  4. Prioritise strength training (especially women)—preserve muscle, boost metabolism and feel stronger.
  5. Work with a coach or trainer to build a plan that supports your energy, mindset and goals.
