ProTom Fitness Transformed My Journey From Struggling Racer to Ginetta Driver

In motorsport, people often assume performance is all about the car – the aerodynamics, the engine, the tyres, the setup. But I learned very quickly that even the best machinery can’t save you if your body isn’t capable of performing at the level the sport demands. My journey in racing has been shaped as much by fitness as by driving skill, and the turning point came when I started working with ProTom Fitness.

From barely finishing races to the podium

When I first started racing, I underestimated just how physically demanding karting was. I struggled with endurance, strength, and consistency. There were races where I could barely hold on until the end, fading physically long before the chequered flag.

But everything changed when I committed to a structured motorsport-specific fitness program. With the support of ProTom Fitness, I went from battling just to finish races to fighting at the front. That progression led to one of the proudest moments of my career: finishing P3 in the British Kart Championships, the most prestigious karting series in the UK – and arguably in Europe.

That achievement wasn’t only a reflection of improved pace. It was the result of being strong enough, fit enough, and mentally sharp enough to deliver consistent, controlled performance under pressure.

Why fitness matters in racing

Pro Tom Fitness helped me understand that motorsport isn’t like traditional athletic training. The demands on a racing driver are unique, especially when it comes to neck strength and upper body control.

As my trainer explained:

“In motorsport, performance isn’t only about machinery, aerodynamics and race strategy. At the highest levels, a driver’s physical conditioning directly influences lap time, consistency, and safety. Among all physical demands, neck strength stands out as one of the most crucial – and most overlooked.”

During high-speed cornering and heavy braking, your helmet and head can effectively weigh 25–30 kg due to G-forces. A weak neck doesn’t just cause discomfort, it affects vision, reaction time, and precision in the final laps when mistakes become costly.

ProTom Fitness built a training program around these specific demands:

  • Endurance over brute strength
  • Isometric holds for stability
  • Exercises simulating lateral and rotational G-forces
  • Balanced neck, core and upper-back training
  • Periodised plans around race schedules

Using specialised equipment – resistance bands, neck harnesses, isometric trainers, multi-directional rigs – I developed the physical resilience required to perform at higher levels of competition.

The results: Moving up to Ginetta

Thanks to this transformation, I’ve now made the step up into Ginetta racing, something that would have been impossible without the physical foundation I built. The cars are faster, the G-forces higher, and the races longer, but I’m readier than ever.

The work I’ve done with ProTom Fitness hasn’t just made me stronger. It’s made me more confident, more consistent, and more capable of pushing the limits of the car.

Racing fitness isn’t optional – it’s a competitive advantage

What I’ve learned is simple: if you want to succeed in motorsport, fitness isn’t a bonus. It’s a necessity. With the right coaching, the right program, and the right mindset, your body becomes just as much of a performance tool as your kart or car.

Pro Tom Fitness helped take me from struggling to finish races to fighting on some of the biggest stages in British motorsport and now stepping into the world of Ginetta racing. The journey is far from over, but thanks to the foundation we’ve built, I’m ready for whatever comes next.
