Which Martial Art is the best for self defence and fitness?

If your goal is simple – which martial art is most likely to help you win a real fight – you need to think beyond tradition, belts or aesthetics. This article explore the strengths and weaknesses of each martial art with an eye to which discipline keeps you fit as well. At ProTom Fitness we have tried them all but our exercise instruction focuses on Thai kick boxing (though boxing training is also available).

Below is a practical, no-nonsense ranking of six major martial arts based on fight effectiveness first, followed by a fitness score out of 100 reflecting how well each discipline improves strength, endurance and overall conditioning.

Ranking martial arts for real world fighting and fitness

Muay Thai

Fight Effectiveness Rank: #1

Muay Thai earns the top spot because it is brutally efficient and battle-tested. Known as the ‘Art of Eight Limbs,’ it uses punches, kicks, elbows and knees, making it one of the most complete striking systems in the world.

What sets Muay Thai apart is its emphasis on full-contact sparring and conditioning. Fighters train to absorb and deliver damage under pressure. Clinch work – grabbing and controlling your opponent at close range – is especially valuable in real fights where distance collapses quickly.

Unlike traditional striking arts that may rely on forms or point scoring, Muay Thai is built for knockouts and control. If you had to rely purely on striking in a street altercation, this is arguably your best bet.

Fitness Score: 95/100
Exceptional for cardio, core strength, and muscular endurance. Few disciplines match its physical intensity.

Boxing

Fight Effectiveness Rank: #2

Boxing is often underestimated in martial arts discussions, but it is one of the most refined combat systems ever developed. Its focus is narrow – hands only – but within that domain, it is unmatched.

Boxers develop elite footwork, head movement, timing, and punching power. In a real fight, the ability to land clean punches while avoiding damage is critical, and boxing excels here.

However, the lack of grappling or kicking limits its versatility. Against someone who can clinch, wrestle, or kick effectively, a boxer may struggle.

Fitness Score: 98/100
Arguably the best overall conditioning system. Incredible for cardiovascular health, coordination, and fat loss.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)

Fight Effectiveness Rank: #3

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is the king of ground fighting. Its core philosophy is that a smaller person can defeat a larger opponent using leverage, positioning, and submissions.

In real fights, many altercations end up on the ground. BJJ practitioners are highly skilled at controlling opponents, escaping bad positions, and applying chokes or joint locks.

The downside? BJJ focuses heavily on ground engagement, which can be risky in situations involving multiple attackers or hard surfaces.

Fitness Score: 90/100
Great for strength, flexibility, and muscular endurance, though less cardio-intensive than striking arts.

Krav Maga

Fight Effectiveness Rank: #4

Krav Maga is designed specifically for self defence, and was developed for military use. It emphasises quick, decisive action – targeting vulnerable areas like the eyes, throat, and groin.

Unlike sport-based martial arts, Krav Maga trains for chaos: weapons, multiple attackers, and surprise situations. It’s practical and aggressive.

However, its effectiveness depends heavily on training quality. Many schools lack consistent full-contact sparring, which can reduce real-world readiness.

Fitness Score: 85/100
Good for functional fitness and stress conditioning, but less structured than combat sports in terms of physical progression.

Judo

Fight Effectiveness Rank: #5

Judo specialises in throws and takedowns. A skilled judoka can slam an opponent onto the ground with significant force, potentially ending a fight instantly.

It’s particularly effective in close-range situations and against untrained opponents. Balance, grip strength, and leverage are key strengths.

However, modern judo has many rules, limiting techniques like leg grabs. It also doesn’t cover striking, which is a major gap in a real fight.

Fitness Score: 88/100
Excellent for strength, grip endurance and explosive power.

Karate

Fight Effectiveness Rank: #6

Karate varies widely depending on style. Traditional karate use controlled Kata techniques, while modern variants may include sparring.

While it teaches discipline, speed, and precision, many karate systems lack consistent full-contact training. This can make it harder to apply techniques under real pressure.

That said, certain full-contact styles (like Kyokushin) are far more effective than point-based systems.

Fitness Score: 80/100
Good for flexibility, coordination, and moderate cardio, but typically less intense than combat sports.

If your sole aim is to win a fight then Muay Thai, Boxing, or BJJ are your strongest options.

If your goal includes self defence scenarios beyond one-on-one fighting, Krav Maga offers situational awareness and survival tactics.

And if you’re focused on fitness, you can’t go wrong with Boxing or Muay Thai. They deliver elite-level conditioning while still being highly practical.

The best choice ultimately depends on your goals – but if effectiveness is your priority, train where you spar hard, train consistently, and adapt under pressure.

MMA

Mixed Martial Arts fighting is a sport which combines the most effective aspects of all the martial arts listed above. Brazilian Jujitsu is often used to get a ground submission while Muay Thai boxing is often used for punching and kicking strikes. MMA has become a big spectator sport!
